Current iOS user recounts his time with Android

I'm not a troll. I own the latest iOS devices, and I'll prove it. http://imgur.com/MbtjrcS
That picture was actually taken from an iPad mini Retina, so you know for sure that I am deeply entrenched in the iOS ecosystem.
I think that it's not that common to find people who switch between iOS and android and give reliable accounts of the experience. A lot of times you find fanboys writing fake posts to bolster their claims that one particular ecosystem or device is better than the other; you find people who only used the device for a few weeks and got frustrated and switched. I will try to give as honest of an account as possible. My background: I've owned a Nexus 4, HTC One, and a Nexus 5. I've used those three devices (combined) for more than a year. I currently own a Macbook Pro Retina, an iPad Air, an iPad Mini /w Retina, and an iPhone 5s. I jumped ship from android to iOS because I was always curious about the iOS platform and it always had this mysterious quality to it (since I had always used android before).
iOS devices do a few things better than Android devices:
  1. The app design aesthetic is better (dedicated iOS app designers tend to care a lot about this). This is almost always what people mean when they talk about the App quality in iOS being better. The UX design and aesthetic is generally more beautiful. The audio app selection is much better // game selection is slightly better.
  2. The build quality of the products is unmatched, still (no the HTC One is not on par, it's close but not quite there. There are cracks and seams in the zero-gap plastic)
  3. The integration across the iOS and OS X environment exists (it's not particularly awesome, but it exists)
  4. iOS OS updates are better (unless you are on a Nexus device, then it doesn't really matter)
  5. iPad apps are better optimized than Android tablet apps; they just are
Android does a whole lot of things better than iOS:
  1. You cannot use torrent clients, bitcoin apps, and tasker like apps in iOS (I suppose you could argue for jailbreak apps, but I'm comparing stock experiences here, and even then jailbreaking is a much more difficult activity as Apple is actively hostile towards it and iOS 7 jailbreaks have broken with every .1 update)
  2. the screen sizes make the typing experience much, much better on a Nexus 5 than an iPhone 5s (People who are used to iOS will think they type fine because of autocorrect, but if you actually compare typing without autocorrect, like when you are entering in addresses in the address bar or passwords, you'll find that you type far worse on the 4 inch screen than on a Nexus 5. The autocorrect is also worse in iOS than it is in android (my iOS devices refuse to acknowledge that 'well' is not we'll))
  3. Android allows the user to set defaults, which means you don't have to use crappy apple services, like apple maps. Don't try and argue for Apple Maps being good enough; it's just not. I am consistently misled with Apple maps. I would say that about 30% of the time the app is wrong. This is unacceptable because I do not know that the app is wrong until I have actually driven to the wrong location. THIS rarely ever happens with Google maps prompting me to have to double check Google maps after using Apple maps, which means that I should have just used Google maps to begins with. Without being able to set defaults, you are stuck using Apple maps first.
  4. The integration with Google Now blows away the Siri alternative. I will give you some examples: when I ask siri to search for 'al pastor tacos' siri returns 'Al Pastore tacos' or 'I'll past tacos' which leads to useless results. Google, on the other hand, returns restaurants closest to me that serve al pastor tacos. . . When you search on siri for "core data sync" she looks up "core data sink," let me remind you that core data sync is an Apple technology. . . Google, on the other hand, gets it right and looks up "core data sync." Google is a lot, a lot better than Apple at cloud services and software. What this means is that Siri's mix of data is not allowing her to search for words with context. If I say core data (the next word is probably sync, not sink).
  5. KitKat is a lot more stable than iOS 7. I get crashes about 3 times a day on average . . . this may be because I'm using exclusively 64-bit devices, and to be fair, Apple has annoucned a fix, but for now, Apple's latest devices 4-5 months after release are many, many times more buggy than the Nexus 5. I experience about 3 crashes a day and maybe one complete crash that reboots my phone once every 2 days. Compare that experience to Android and you'll notice immediately that Apple has some stability issues, esp. with 64-bit software (the native Apple apps are 64-bit).
  6. Email is not pushed to you unless you are using an @icloud.com address. If you're an Android user, you probably don't know what this means because you've never had to worry about it. Well, it means that when you get an email, it won't show up in your inbox for 15 minutes. The iPhone needs to poll Google Gmail or your IMAP email and it does this once every 15 minutes, which sucks. This ultimately means that you either have to use a separate app for Gmail or lose the ability to have a unified, instantaneous email box. Some third party alternatives might solve this. -- Exchange is pushed, not imap, and not gmail
http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/03/25/googles-push-gmail-changes-surprise-new-iphone-buyers-apple-store-reps
  1. Notifications in iOS are terrible; Android solved this in a much more elegant, useful way. The iOS 7 Today screen is largely useless, and there is no clear all for notifications, which just pile up. You can't swipe them away either.
  2. The Android share menu is much, much better. When I used Android, I thought that the share menu was a bit cluttered and ridiculous looking, but when I left, I realized how useful that actually is. Apple allows you to share to only Apple approved services (Facebook, Twitter, and Safari reading list, etc.) If, for example, I want to add to Pocket, I can't. If I want to share a message in Google Hangouts, I can't—I have to share it to 'copy' and then open the app and paste it.
  3. Apps update much faster, there is no approval process in the Google Play store, so the apps get updated as fast as developers can update them.
  4. Widgets are kind of cool, but not killer features, and they usually mess up having a uniform UX. But, the ability to have them is kind of nice.
  5. iOS apps do not sync in the background nearly as well as Android apps. Maybe this is the reason that you generally experience decent battery life on iOS, but it means your auto upload only works sometimes on iOS, not all the time.
So if you've read a BGR article and are wondering whether or not the grass is greener on the other side, it's not.
Edit - -People don't seem to believe me about the crashes, so here:
http://www.macrumors.com/2014/01/22/apple-ios7-crash-fix/
http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/01/22/apple-says-fix-in-the-works-for-random-ios-7-crashing-issue
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/01/apple-random-ios-7-crashes-to-be-remedied-in-upcoming-software-update/
http://techland.time.com/2014/01/22/apple-promises-ios-7-crash-fix/
Apple's already admitted that there's a crash issue. Just to further prove my point about the bugginess . . . if you want to crash any iPad go into settings and tap three times on Wallpapers & Brightness. It will crash any and all iOS 7 iPads.
I would also argue that the reason why people don't realize that iOS crashes as much is because there is no warning. Safari will just close and you will be returned to your home screen. With Android, you usually get a modal that pops up.

If the world is feudal now, imagine bitcoin.

Imagine if you will, around 300 people holding all the worlds wealth, but unlike current super elites (that own the mechanics of business and have their liquidity tied to corporations that grind the gears of the system we are in) these new elite likes Roger Ver, simply hoddle.
The worlds liquidity and money velocity would grind to a halt. The distribution of wealth would be far worse then any period of history, dwarfing the medieval kings.
Nobody could operate without liquidity loans from Roger Ver, who could live out his fantasy of becoming overlord. Apple would have no liquidity for ordering iPhone widgets. Texaco could not pump liquid climate gassulator into our flying cars and Tesla could not sell us the next solution.
As crazy as our world it I think its better Bitcoin remains digital gold with the potential to self combust.

Bitcoin price widget app for iPhone?

So I'm getting used to my new (first) iPhone and missing a few things from Android. Are there any nice, simple Bitcoin price widgets? Something that displays GBP ideally. Bitzazu almost gets it right but the price seems to be $10-15 too high, so not sure what tickeindex it uses.
I like the idea of the price appearing on the app icon, but those apps don't seem to auto update frequently.

Reddit featured image for link post shows up blurry on iPhone.

I run a wordpress blog themerkle.com Ever since I switched to the new theme the images on reddit that show up when someone shares our articles are blurry when accessed through the mobile site.
I am not sure how to fix it but here is an example:
https://www.reddit.com/Bitcoin/comments/3upolx/agressive_stance_by_metro_bank_shows_why_bitcoin/?ref=share&ref_source=link
If you visit think link via an iPhone you will see the featured image is blurry. I am not sure why that is happening but its only happening on the mobile version of the site. Any help is appreciated.
SOLVED:
So here is the solution. Removing the below function in core.php removed the meta property which served a tiny thumbnail 85x85px to reddit as opposed to the original image.
facebook thumbnail image function it_facebook_image() { global $post; $image = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id( $post->ID ), 'widget-post' ); $out = ''; echo $out; }

Hey Marques! What was the weirdest fan encounter you've had? Alright so I went to an ultimate tournament with my college team a couple of weeks ago in another state. We're having a team dinner at some random diner we found, and I'm checking Twitter as we wait for our food.
I see a tweet that says something like "Oh, I didn't know you were on this campus. Cool." from a name I don't recognize. I assume it's someone who saw me while we were playing Ultimate. Neat. I reply that he should've said hi.
I get a reply minutes later - "didn't want to disturb you, seems like you're with a big group"
Wait what? Now? Right now? Did this person just see me?
Long story short, 5 minutes later I'm shaking hands with this dude in the diner because he saw us walking in. Not even a weird encounter, just a weird way for it to happen haha.
What is your favourite keyboard? Don't hurt me for this. I love my Apple keyboard. It's actually a Colorware model, so it's jet black with white letters.
I've tried mechanical keyboards (red and brown switches) but never stayed more than a few months. I just type (essays) way faster on the chicklet keys with barely any travel. Plus it's super compact and I can move it off the desk when I need to shoot a video there.
Have you tried topre switches? Nope. Should I?
When did you know that your Youtube channel would take off? 2: At this point I have the flexibility to do whatever interests me - right now it happens to be tech video on YouTube, but that could change.
What is the video you are most proud of? Ooh, tough call. There are a few special ones, but I think the relatively "not-so-special" RX100 MKIII review (Link to youtu.be is tops because it's the first video I shot with my current camera, and I got a lot of interesting shots, and I think it unlocked a lot of creative stuff that I've been trying in videos since.
In terms of pure visuals? iPhone 6 Plus Review: Link to youtu.be
Your perfect phone video looked cool! That was a lot of fun! Props to The Verge for the awesome animation work that really made the whole video. I'll be doing more stuff like that (I suck at animation) with them when we get the chance.
Would camera did you use before your C 100? Canon's 5D MKIII Canon 60D Canon t2i Sanyo Xacti CG10 HP Pavilion dv7t webcam.
Could you explain more about your video setup? What type of camera do you use? What software do you use for editing? Is it just you shooting or do you have help? I'm shooting with a RED Epic Dragon (CF) and 90% of the time I'm rocking the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. That glass is one of my favorite pieces of tech in a long time.
I edit with the Adobe suite - Premiere for most of the editing & coloring, and After Effects once in a while for some motion tracking or vfx.
I'm the camera man, lighting, set design... everything :]
Do you learn all of this as you go along, gradually? Or was/were there a point(s) in your life where you sat down and said, "I'm gonna up my game" ? I think that after almost every video I upload.
I mostly just wanted to say thank you for the honesty, thoughtfulness and integrity. Design is hard. I can't draw.
No tech questions, it what is you long term plan? Do you see yourself doing reviews at 40? will you design tech? Actually producing that tech is expensive. It's a whole 'nother ballgame.
Also what are you going to do with you business degree? The "Dream smartphone" stuff and concepts like that are the closest I've come to designing tech. Stuff like that is fun.
Best ultimate player you've ever had the pleasure of guarding? I got to guard Mark Lloyd for a few points in Toronto. He didn't do much those points, so I feel like I held my own :]
Will Garden State be back better than ever next season? GSU will be back better than ever every season.
Favorite post tournament meal? Steak.
Do you think the MLU has what it takes to outlast the AUDL, and establish itself as a more major player? Hard to tell! Their strategies are very different, and I'm curious which one has the advantage. My decision on who to play for isn't about the leagues as much as the teams, though. I want to play for the best team I can.
Just 2 questions: What is the phone you're currently using as your daily driver and what's your all time favorite phone? I was asked for my favorite phone of ALL TIME the other day, and I went with the original Moto DROID. Something about its timing, with the ad campaign and the new OS... Exciting stuff! I'll never forget that unboxing.
Hey Marques! Huge fan of your videos. How did the unmistakable "Hey whatisup guys" intro become a thing? Slow evolution, actually. I started by trying to have something to say near the beginning of every video that reminded people that I'd done other videos. So it started with something much longer like "Hey what's up guys, Marques Brownlee here back with another HD video"
Thanks for your great work. How will you maintain your sincerity and journalistic integrity as your popularity explodes? Have you given any thought to signing an ethics pledge? I'll say "same way I have since the beginning." I talk about things from the perspective of the consumer - mostly because that's what I am. A guy going out and buying things and sharing that experience with the viewer. Nothing should change that, but if it ever does, I'll absolutely make it known.
Do you purchase all the hardware you review? Almost all of it is purchased by me, yeah.
What was the most disappointing gadget / piece of tech you have ever bought? Most disappointing piece of tech I've ever bought? Geez. I don't remember any because I've blocked them all out of my mind haha.
I know you are graduating in business. Have you heard of dogecoins? What is you opinion on digital currencies and it's promises for the tech world? I've heard of dogecoins and bitcoins and all these other virtual currencies. I haven't had a reason to use any of them yet, but I'm all ears.
I'm deeply curious, what are your thoughts on Linus Tech Tips? Linus is the man. Met him at CES last year and we've been in touch since. He cranks out videos like no tomorrow, which is awesome.
He's the only one that makes me honestly consider the merits of having a crew or partner working alongside to make videos.
Hello Marques, really fond of your work. From your twitter account, “Fun fact: I've never accepted money to alter any video I've ever made in any way.”. I won't name any, but yeah it happens all the time. Check out almost any other channel doing videos consistently. There's always sponsorships, interruptions, ad-reads, etc.
Can you name some companies that did offer you money? Is that common? I don't do those because I'm not a fan of watching them. My #1 goal is to make videos that I'd want to watch.
You started out reviewing things you happened to have or you bought for yourself. How and when did you decide to buy something just (or especially) to review it? How did your parents react to that, assuming you were still pretty young? The thing is - I didn't start out going out of my way to buy things to review. I bought things that I was going to use anyway, then decided to do a review on them after the fact.
It started with a laptop that I bought. I bought it for myself for school, then made about 40 videos on it!
What computer do you use now? 8-core Mac Pro. Link to i.imgur.com
Where do you see the mobile computing world moving in the next 2-3 years? We all know how prevalent smartphones are in today's culture, but seeing projects like the Sharp Aquos Crystal, Yotaphone 2, and Ubuntu Edge get me excited about overall phone design, innovation, and the prospect of mobile and desktop computing in one device. Any ideas on what the more immediate future might hold? The move to higher-res displays seem to have divided the tech community. Some argue that the negatives (specifically the hit to battery life) greatly outweigh the positives. Another argument is that they're pointless on anything smaller than a ~5.7ish" screen (which is considered a large phone). What do you think? Are 2K/4K screens worth it? I would argue that the introduction of the Moto G and the Moto E have done wonders for Android adoption (at least in the US). These are great phones, especially considering the price. Where would you like to see Moto headed next, especially considering the transfer in ownership to Lenovo? Mobile has been making phones bigger and bigger over the past few years, and I think in the next 2-3 years that finally halts. Phones can't get much bigger. We say this every year, but... for real this time. - We see a similar polarization every time a new standard comes around in tech. I don't think this one is any different - we didn't "need" 1080p displays in phones 2 years ago, and we certainly don't "need" QHD displays in phones now. But they're still better, and past this first generation of devices, I think it'll be worth it. - Yep, Moto G and Moto E are some of Moto's best selling phones ever. I don't want to speak for their future, but they're kinda killing it right now and I hope they don't lose their swagger. - Android: I want to see another graphics focus. Project Butter v2. iOS: I want to see widget on my homescreen. Is that too much to ask?
